China deploys naval task force to Gulf of Aden

The Chinese Navy has deployed its 48th naval escort task force to the Gulf of Aden for maritime security operations. The task force consists of the guided-missile destroyer Tangshan, guided-missile frigate Daqing, and supply ship Taihu, departing yesterday for the region. While officially tasked with counter-piracy and protecting sea lanes, analysts suggest the deployment may also serve to protect Chinese shipping interests against potential US naval actions. This comes as the US maintains a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz following its failure to reopen the strategic waterway, threatening China's oil imports from the Persian Gulf.
