7.8 quake reshapes Mindanao coastline

The June 8 earthquake in the southern Philippines, a 7.8-magnitude temblor driven by movement of the nearby Cotabato Trench, has permanently altered the coastline of Mindanao. Residents reported seeing previously submerged coral reefs suddenly push above the waterline as the land shifted. The quake toppled buildings, triggered landslides, and killed at least 76 people on the southern island.
