Malaysia cracks down on World Cup illegal betting

Malaysian police arrested 58 people and seized more than half a million ringgit (US$124,000) in illicit proceeds during a World Cup gambling sweep. The crackdown targets illegal football betting, which spikes during the quadrennial tournament. Unlicensed betting is a criminal offense in Malaysia, and authorities have been bracing for a rise in illegal sports wagers. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director M. Kumar confirmed the operation.
