Japan tourism down 3.6% in May as Chinese arrivals drop

Japan's foreign visitor arrivals dropped 3.6% year-on-year to 3.56 million in May, marking the second straight monthly decline, according to government data released June 17. The fall was driven by declining travel from China amid worsening diplomatic relations between the two countries. However, arrivals from the United States and Europe increased, suggesting limited disruption from broader geopolitical tensions such as the Middle East conflict, the Japan National Tourism Organisation reported.
