Uganda cancels $3.1bn railway deal with Turkish contractor

Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced on June 16 that the $3.1bn Standard Gauge Railway contract awarded to Turkey's Yapi Merkezi has been cancelled. There has been no confirmation or denial from the responsible government ministry. The military leader, who is the president's son and heir apparent, may be seeking to pressure Turkey to extradite Ugandan critics living in self-exile.
