Taiwan poll shows goodwill to Beijing valued over US ties

A survey by Taiwan's government-funded Institute for National Defence and Security Research, polling 1,127 residents from May 28-31, found that 44.9% of respondents believe showing goodwill to mainland China is the most important approach to safeguarding the island's security and peace across the strait, outpacing support for deepening defense ties with the United States. The poll was conducted soon after President Donald Trump's visit to Beijing last month. The findings suggest a public preference for diplomatic engagement over military alignment, though cross-strait tensions remain high.
