Mount Pinatubo eruption causes mass evacuation

Thousands of residents near Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines evacuated on June 12, 1991, after the volcano erupted. Thereseita Santiago and her neighbors walked 20 km to Olongapo City with only children and few belongings. The eruption sent a plume of ash and gas 25 km into the atmosphere. The event marked one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century.
