Malian forces retreat as Gao, Mopti at risk

Tuareg separatist and Al-Qaeda-linked JNIM forces have nearly reversed the 2023 advance by the Malian Armed Forces and the Wagner Group in northern Mali. The coalition has advanced with little resistance through towns north of Gao and is now engaged in fighting for control of Bourem and the city of Gao itself, two towns of great strategic importance due to their connection to the Niger River. This rapid push threatens to roll back government gains and places key northern hubs at risk of falling to the militant alliance.
