Hanging serac blocks Everest route near Camp 1

A significant hanging serac has been spotted blocking the main climbing track through the Khumbu Icefall on Mount Everest, just below Camp 1. The obstruction was identified via satellite imagery analysis, which also noted significantly less snow on the ground compared to the same date last year. This new hazard adds to the existing delays caused by a large crevasse and ice blocks that have already stalled the opening of the primary summit route for the 2026 climbing season.
