Colombia's Petro warns of Latin American 'rebellion'

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has warned that continued U.S. pressure on dissenting Latin American leaders could lead to a regional 'rebellion' against Washington's influence. Speaking at a summit of Latin American countries in Barcelona, Petro stated that the recent attack on Caracas and kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro were intended to intimidate other leaders, but could backfire. He compared current U.S. policy to the colonial system of the Spanish king and predicted a similar uprising if the U.S. government fails to rethink its relations with the region. The meeting was also attended by the leaders of Spain, Brazil, and Mexico.
