Hungary to open communist secret police archives

Hungary's next government, led by Prime Minister-elect Péter Magyar, has vowed to open the historical archives of the country's communist-era secret police. The announcement was made by the man who will run Magyar's office, following the coalition's victory in this month's parliamentary election. The move would grant public access to records from the Államvédelmi Hatóság (ÁVH), a key institution of political repression during the Cold War. Magyar is expected to formally take office on May 9, after which the policy is likely to be implemented.
