Indian Army to replace Russian Grad with Pinaka rockets

The Indian Army is undertaking a major modernization shift by replacing its aging Russian BM-21 Grad rocket systems with the domestically developed Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL). The plan aims to scale up to approximately 22 Pinaka regiments, with an interim target of 10 regiments by mid-2026. The Pinaka system offers greater range—up to 75 km for guided variants—and precision using GPS/NavIC, marking a doctrinal shift from area bombardment to precision strikes. This move, partly inspired by lessons from the Ukraine war, emphasizes indigenous production under the 'Make in India' initiative.
