Central banks hold record gold stockpiles

Central banks worldwide are sitting on massive stockpiles of gold following years of record purchases. Their holdings now total approximately 38,666 tons, which reflects about 17% of all the gold ever mined. Despite this significant accumulation by official institutions, the largest portion of the world's gold remains in private hands, with an estimated 97,645 tons held as jewelry and other private assets.
