IEA proposes Basra-Ceyhan oil pipeline

International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol has proposed constructing a new oil pipeline from Iraq's Basra fields to Turkey's Ceyhan terminal on the Mediterranean. The project is explicitly framed as a strategic alternative to shipping oil through the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently blockaded by Iran. Birol stated the Basra-Ceyhan pipeline would be "extremely attractive and a very important project for both Iraq and Turkey." If built, it would significantly alter regional energy export routes and reduce reliance on the Persian Gulf chokepoint.
