EU Commissioner Proposes New Defense Union Treaty

European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius has proposed concluding a new intergovernmental treaty to create a European defense union, questioning whether existing EU treaties are sufficient. He called for a 'real European defense union' that would include the UK, Norway, and Ukraine, modeled after the Schengen Agreement. Kubilius outlined a vision for a Security Council with permanent members, a 100,000-strong EU army, and a new headquarters. This initiative, first floated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, is framed as a response to the US strategic pivot toward the Indo-Pacific region.
