Goita says Mali 'under control' after coup attempt

Mali's junta leader Assimi Goita has emerged publicly to declare that the country is 'under control' following what has been described as an attempted coup. The statement comes after a series of coordinated insurgent attacks on April 25 that targeted four major cities and killed the defense minister in a suicide car bombing. Goita had previously vowed to 'neutralise' those responsible and made his first public appearance since the attacks, addressing the nation on state TV and visiting a hospital. Russia's Africa Corps units reportedly helped repel the attacks, and Russia announced it had deployed additional forces to the region.
