Iran-US Confrontation Escalates
Tensions between the United States and Iran continued to escalate as President Donald Trump received a briefing from the US military on possible operations against Iran, causing Brent crude to surge 5.7% to $124.8 a barrel. Trump warned that the naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz could last months, and oil prices jumped above $126, the highest since 2022. The blockade has already turned away 42 Iran-linked vessels, and the US is seeking international partners for a 'Maritime Freedom Construct' to restore navigation, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio formally approving the initiative.
CENTCOM has drafted plans for a 'short and powerful' wave of strikes on Iran and is requesting deployment of the Dark Eagle hypersonic missile system, still under production, to the Middle East. Israeli Navy Intercepts Gaza Flotilla
The Israeli Navy has intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, a Gaza-bound aid mission, in international waters near Crete, seizing more than 20 vessels and detaining approximately 175 activists. The operation involved Shayetet 13 commandos and expanded on earlier interceptions of the Al-Samoud fleet. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz imposed sanctions on the flotilla's crowdfunding campaign, accusing it of being organized by Hamas. The flotilla, comprising around 100 vessels and 1,000 participants, had been warned to turn back and had its communications jammed. Detainees are being transported to Ashdod port for deportation.
Renewed Hostilities on Israel-Lebanon Border
Hezbollah launched rockets and a drone from Lebanon toward northern Israel on April 28-29, with one rocket intercepted and another striking an open area. A drone struck a car near the border, and sirens sounded in Zarit over a suspected drone approach. In response, the IDF conducted widespread strikes across southern Lebanon, hitting over 30 towns and villages, including Baraashit and Shaqra, where more than 30 Hezbollah infrastructure sites were dismantled. Israeli strikes killed five family members in one incident and a Lebanese soldier and his brother in another. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir stated there is no ceasefire on the combat front and troops will continue operations until threats are removed.
President Trump revealed he has spoken daily with Prime Minister Netanyahu and urged restraint in Lebanon, advising only 'surgical' action and against knocking down buildings. Netanyahu reportedly indicated Israel will need to increase its response. Hezbollah claimed to have destroyed an Israeli Merkava tank using an FPV drone in Beit Lif.
