Iran was rocked by reports of widespread explosions and missile launches from Kuwait, amid conflicting claims about air defense drills and external attacks. In a major escalation at sea, Iran's IRGC seized two commercial container ships and attacked a third in the Strait of Hormuz, while U.S. forces intensified blockade enforcement. Cross-border violence between Israel and Hezbollah continued, resulting in civilian and journalist casualties, and the deaths of two French UN peacekeepers.
Major Escalation: Widespread Explosions and Strikes Reported Across Iran
Explosions were reported across multiple Iranian cities, including Tehran, Qom, Chitgar, Shahriar, Karaj, Ahvaz, and Isfahan. Israeli media outlet Hadshot reported the operation appeared to be a large-scale attack, while Iranian sources initially claimed air defense drills were underway. Iranian media later reported that air defense drills were ongoing in several regions, involving IRGC air defense units and IRIAF fighter jets, with MiG-29 jets heard over Tehran.
Following these reports, local Iranian media confirmed the observation of missile launches from Kuwait toward Iran, with unconfirmed reports of ground-based ballistic missiles targeting Tehran. Iranian sources later stated that no enemy aircraft, drones, or quadcopters had entered its airspace, contradicting earlier reports of fighter jet activity.
Maritime Confrontation Intensifies in the Strait of Hormuz
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy seized two container ships, the Liberia-flagged MSC Francesca and Panama-flagged MSC Epaminondas, in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC stated the ships were seized for jeopardizing maritime security by operating without permits and tampering with navigation systems, and they were escorted to Iranian waters. Iran released video footage showing IRGC personnel boarding the vessels.
In a separate incident, the IRGC Navy engaged and disabled the Greek-owned commercial vessel Euphoria in the Strait of Hormuz. Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis confirmed a Greek-affiliated cargo ship was attacked by Iran near the strategic waterway. This aggressive maritime posture occurred as a large fleet of more than 30 IRGC fast-attack craft was observed operating in the Strait.
Concurrently, U.S. Central Command provided details on the enforcement of the maritime blockade against Iran, stating American forces directed 29 vessels to turn around or return to port in the last 24 hours, with an updated count later rising to 31 vessels. The U.S. military also intercepted at least three Iranian-flagged oil tankers in Asian waters, redirecting them. These enforcement actions contrast with reports that at least 34 Iran-linked tankers have breached the U.S. naval blockade. A Pentagon assessment informed Congress that removing Iranian naval mines from the Strait of Hormuz could take up to six months.
U.S. Diplomatic Pressure and Military Assessments on Iran
President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran, stating it will remain in effect until Tehran presents its own proposal for a peaceful settlement. The United States had previously informed Israel of a deadline expiring on Sunday, April 25. Earlier reports indicated Trump had given Iran a short ceasefire window of three to five days to return to negotiations.
White House Press Secretary Karine Leavitt later stated that President Trump had not set a firm deadline for Iran, a point reiterated by White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, who denied reports of an absolute Sunday deadline. A U.S. assessment reported that approximately half of Iran's ballistic missile stockpile remains intact, about 60% of the IRGC's naval force still exists, and the air force was significantly damaged but not destroyed.
Sustained Violence Along the Lebanon-Israel Border
Cross-border hostilities continued. An Israeli drone strike killed two men in the town of Al-Tiri in southern Lebanon. A subsequent Israeli strike in Al-Tiri killed two civilians, wounded journalist Zainab Faraj, and trapped journalist Amal Khalil under rubble; her body was later recovered. The Israel Defense Forces also conducted an airstrike in southern Lebanon's Tayri area after identifying vehicles departing from a Hezbollah-linked building, resulting in casualties and an attack on Lebanese Red Cross vehicles.
Hezbollah claimed multiple attacks. The group released video of an FPV drone strike on an Israeli Merkava tank in the Bayyada area. It announced targeting a gathering of Israeli soldiers in Al-Qantara with a suicide drone and claimed a direct hit on an Israeli military Humvee and troops in Qantara using attack drones. Hezbollah also claimed it downed four Israeli surveillance drones in the Mansouri area and targeted a newly established Israeli artillery position in Al-Bayada with an FPV drone. An earlier Hezbollah drone launched at IDF soldiers was intercepted near the Forward Defense Line.
In a separate incident, two French soldiers serving with the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission were killed in a Hezbollah ambush in Ghandourieh. The United States urged its citizens to leave Lebanon immediately while commercial flights remain available.
Regional Strikes and U.S. Pressure on Iraq
In Iraq, the U.S. Air Force engaged in air defense operations over Erbil, intercepting hostile projectiles and shooting down at least two Iranian kamikaze drones. Iran conducted a drone strike against a training camp and acting headquarters of the Kurdistan Freedom Party in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The Trump administration escalated pressure on Iraq by freezing approximately $500 million in Iraqi oil revenue and halting cash dollar shipments, an action reported as part of an effort to pressure the Iraqi government to rein in Iran-backed militias.
Israel-Gaza
The Israel Defense Forces and Israel Security Agency announced the elimination of a terrorist, Khamis Muhammad Khamis Qassas, in the southern Gaza Strip. Intelligence confirmed he participated in the October 7th attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz and had recently led other terrorists to execute attacks against IDF forces.
