Europe·6 May 2026
Ukraine's unilateral ceasefire collapsed within hours as Russia launched 108 drones and 3 missiles overnight, killing at least 12 in Zaporizhzhia and striking multiple regions. Ukraine retaliated with deep strikes on Russian refineries and military electronics plants, including the Kirishi refinery and Cheboksary facility, while also targeting FSB buildings in Crimea. A French container ship was attacked by a cruise missile in the Strait of Hormuz, and Germany conducted a major nationwide raid against neo-Nazi groups.
Ukraine: Ceasefire Collapses Amid Mutual Strikes
Ukraine's unilateral 'silence regime' ceasefire, proposed by President Zelensky and taking effect at midnight on May 5-6, was immediately violated by Russian forces. Ukraine reported that Russia launched 108 drones and 3 missiles overnight, targeting Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, and Kherson. In Kharkiv, drone strikes injured two people and damaged seven private houses. In Zaporizhzhia, a strike hit an industrial infrastructure facility. Ukrainian air defense forces intercepted or suppressed 89 of the 108 drones, while Russia claimed to have shot down 53 Ukrainian drones. The intensity of attacks was noted as lower than usual, especially from the Ukrainian side.
Prior to the ceasefire taking effect, Russian forces struck Zaporizhzhia with guided aerial bombs, killing at least 12 people and injuring 16 others in one of the deadliest strikes in the region in recent weeks. In Dnipro, an Iskander-M ballistic missile struck near a VARUS distribution centre, causing blast damage. In Poltava, a double-tap attack on a gas extraction site killed five people, including a Hero of Ukraine and three Naftogaz workers, and injured 37. The deliberate targeting of first responders responding to the initial fire constitutes a potential war crime.
Ukraine's military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov stated that Ukraine will continue its ceasefire regime if Russia also observes the silence, emphasizing that the truce demonstrates Ukraine's genuine desire for peace. However, Ukraine accused Russia of violating the ceasefire with new attacks, reporting one person killed and three wounded in frontline areas in the north and east. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister noted that Russia did not accept Kyiv's proposed truce, while an advisor to the Ukrainian Defense Minister stated Ukraine will not observe Russia's proposed truce for May 8-9.
Ukraine: Deep Strikes on Russian Military Infrastructure
Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces confirmed strikes on the Kirishi refinery in Leningrad region and the VNIIR-Progress defense plant in Cheboksary. The Kirishi refinery, processing 20–21 million tons of oil annually, is one of Russia's three largest refineries. Three of its four primary oil distillation units were damaged, rendering the plant inoperable. The refinery has suspended operations, marking a significant disruption to Russian fuel production. The attack is part of Ukraine's ongoing campaign against Russian military infrastructure.
In Cheboksary, Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles struck the VNIIR-Progress military electronics plant, which produces Kometa adaptive antenna arrays critical for precision weapon guidance systems used in Shahed drones, Iskander missiles, Kalibr cruise missiles, and guided bombs. President Zelensky confirmed the use of long-range Flamingo missiles, which traveled over 1,500 kilometers to hit the facility. Satellite imagery confirmed structural damage to the plant's entrance and surrounding areas. Ukrainian drones also struck residential buildings in Cheboksary, killing one person and injuring 12 others.
Ukraine's General Staff reported that strikes by Ukrainian forces in April and on May 1 caused more than $300 million in damage to Tuapse port infrastructure and the Tuapse refinery, including 28 destroyed fuel tanks and 5 damaged ones. The strikes on the Kirishi refinery and Tuapse terminal are part of a broader campaign that has seen six Russian refineries halt operations in the last month.
Ukraine: Strikes on Crimea and Naval Assets
Ukrainian long-range UAVs struck the cities of Dzhankoi and Armyansk in northern Crimea overnight. In Armyansk, the FSB headquarters building was targeted, killing at least five civilians and five security personnel, according to local and Russian sources. Over ten others were wounded. In Dzhankoi, five people died in a Ukrainian UAV attack, according to the head of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov. New explosions and air threats were reported across occupied Crimea, with local sources citing a strike on an FSB building in Armyansk and two powerful explosions in the Bakhchysarai district.
Russian forces struck back at Ukrainian naval assets in Odesa. Geran-2 drones (likely Shahed-type) struck two Ukrainian Navy vessels at the Odesa Port, destroying one Island-class patrol boat (US-supplied) and one Gyurza-M class armored gunboat. Video footage confirmed the strikes, with the Russian military releasing footage showing one boat attempting to hide behind a civilian vessel. The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority had earlier claimed that a civilian vessel was damaged in the strike. A fire at the port followed the Geran UAV strikes.
France: Container Ship Attacked in Strait of Hormuz
French shipping giant CMA CGM confirmed that one of its container ships, the San Antonio, was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. According to US officials cited by CBS News, the vessel was struck by a ground-launched cruise missile in the Persian Gulf near Dubai. The attack resulted in injuries to several Filipino crew members, who have been evacuated and are receiving medical care. Details of the attack method and extent of damage have not yet been disclosed by the company. The incident adds to a series of recent attacks on commercial vessels in the region amid heightened tensions and Iran's ongoing blockade of the strategic waterway.
Germany: Domestic Security Developments
German police, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution conducted a major coordinated raid against violent right-wing extremists across twelve federal states. The operation targets young neo-Nazis suspected of forming criminal organizations, with investigators aiming to prevent acts of violence before they occur. The scale of the operation is significantly larger than previous regional raids.
Separately, the suspect in the deadly car ramming in Leipzig has been identified as Jeffrey K., a 40-year-old boxing coach and football fan with a history of mental instability. The attack, which killed two people, occurred in the city center. Police had previously noted the suspect's psychological problems, and authorities are continuing to investigate the motive.
Turkey: Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Unveiled
Turkey's Ministry of National Defense R&D center unveiled the Yıldırımhan intercontinental ballistic missile at the SAHA 2026 defense exhibition in Istanbul. The missile is capable of reaching Mach 25 speed and has a reported range of 6,000 kilometers (3,720 miles), making it Turkey's longest-range ballistic missile. The liquid-fueled ICBM represents a significant advancement in Turkey's indigenous missile capabilities and strategic deterrent posture.
