Europe·22 April 2026
Intense reciprocal long-range strikes defined the period, with Ukraine targeting Russian refineries and civilian areas in Syzran, and Russia launching a massive drone attack on Odesa and other regions. Ground fighting continued with Russian claims of capturing Veterinarnoye and Grishino, and the battle for Rai-Oleksandrivka began. Civilian casualties mounted in Ukraine's Kharkiv region from drone attacks.
Cross-Border Strikes and Aerial Warfare
A major reciprocal exchange of long-range strikes characterized the last 24 hours. Ukrainian forces conducted a widespread drone attack deep into Russian territory, targeting energy infrastructure and civilian areas. The Syzran oil refinery in the Samara region was significantly damaged, and a separate drone strike in Syzran caused a partial collapse of a residential building entrance, resulting in civilian casualties, including the recovery of an adult and a child's body. The Tuapse oil refinery in Krasnodar Krai continued to burn nearly 48 hours after a prior strike. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses intercepted 155 Ukrainian drones over regions including Samara, Voronezh, Saratov, and Crimea.
In response, Russian forces launched a massive overnight drone attack on Ukraine, with Ukrainian air defenses reporting they engaged 215 targets and downed or suppressed 189 of them, including approximately 140 Shahed-type UAVs. Russia also conducted a major drone assault on Odesa involving at least 30 Geran-2 drones targeting port infrastructure and an oil terminal. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Dmytro Kuleba confirmed damage to piers, warehouses, and railway infrastructure in Odesa. Separately, a Russian Iskander-K cruise missile launched from Voronezh Oblast impacted near Pavlohrad in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast after a flight path that circled past the city of Dnipro.
Frontline Combat and Claimed Advances
Ground fighting continued across multiple axes with both sides reporting tactical advances. Russian forces and affiliated channels claimed the capture of the village of Veterinarnoye in the Kharkiv region and Grishino in the Donetsk region. Pro-Russian sources also reported advances near Karaichnoye, north of Miropolskoye, and that troops had entered Rai-Oleksandrivka, where a battle has begun. Russian assault units were reported to be advancing on the outskirts of Krasny Liman. Russia's Vostok assault brigade completed clearing operations in Minkovka village in the Kramatorsk direction.
Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov continued to make exaggerated claims of Russian advances and heavy Ukrainian losses, stating over 1,700 square kilometers had been captured since January 2026. On the battlefield, Russian Lancet loitering munitions destroyed a Ukrainian CAESAR self-propelled artillery piece in the Shavrovo area of the Donetsk People's Republic. A Ukrainian soldier ambushed and killed two Russian soldiers on motorcycles in the Pokrovsk area. Russian forces also carried out long-range strikes on Ukrainian military targets in the Donbas and struck a temporary deployment point for Ukraine's Kraken special forces unit near Zolochev in the Kharkiv region.
Civilian Impact and Regional Strikes
Civilian areas in Ukraine's Kharkiv region sustained heavy bombardment. Russian drone attacks across the region over the past 24 hours killed one civilian and injured 20. In the Bohodukhiv district, strikes injured at least 16 people across several towns, while in the Kharkiv district, a drone strike on a car killed a 66-year-old man. The city of Bohodukhiv was also hit by strikes causing powerful explosions and large fires.
Elsewhere, Russian strikes targeted critical infrastructure in southern Ukraine. Beyond the port attacks in Odesa, a railway station's sorting yard in Zaporizhzhia was hit. In Russia, the Belgorod region reported damage to 12 settlements from drone attacks, with one man wounded in the Grayvoronsky district and damage to buildings and vehicles. Russian authorities issued a UAV attack warning for Belgorod Municipal District. A missile threat alert was also issued for occupied Crimea after launcher activity was detected, though it was later canceled.
Political and Strategic Developments
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed that Ukraine's campaign of long-range drone strikes against Russian territory, focusing on oil refineries and defense industry sites, would continue. In a coordinated operation, Ukrainian forces conducted strikes targeting Russian command and control infrastructure, including a Black Sea Fleet vessel traffic control hub in Sevastopol, UAV control centers in Russia's Kursk region, and multiple command posts in the Belgorod region and occupied Donetsk.
In Russia, the Federal Security Service claimed it detained a 45-year-old Russian citizen in Moscow who was allegedly planning an explosion at Ministry of Defense facilities on the orders of Ukrainian terrorists. In regional diplomacy, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna rejected a claim by President Zelensky that Russia might mobilize forces to attack a Baltic state, stating it did not match Estonia's intelligence assessments.
