Horn of Africa: Security and Strategic Threats
Somalia faces a dual threat from internal militant violence and escalating geopolitical tensions. Al-Shabaab conducted an ambush against Somali Army forces in Daynuunay, Bay region, killing several soldiers. The militants were armed with Chinese-made weapons, including Type 80 machine guns, PG-7V/T69-1 anti-tank rockets, and Type 56-1 assault rifles.
Separately, Somalia's ambassador to Ethiopia, Abdullahi Warfa, issued a threat on social media platform X, stating that any country interfering in Somalia's internal affairs could face consequences, including possible restrictions on access to the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. Somali media linked this warning to Israel's recognition of Somaliland's independence at the end of last year, implying potential US involvement. The strait is a critical global trade route, with approximately 12% of global trade, 9% of maritime oil transport, and up to 30% of container cargo passing through it. A blockade would force ships to take a longer route around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope.
North Africa: Military Deployments and Partnerships
Russian military presence in Libya continues to be confirmed. A convoy belonging to Russia's African Corps was identified in eastern Libya, including Ural-63704 Tornado-U and KamAZ-53949 Typhoon-K armored vehicles designed for mine protection and troop transport. The sighting confirms the ongoing activity of Russian military personnel supporting the Libyan National Army led by Khalifa Haftar.
In Egypt, the Egyptian Thunderbolt Forces and Indian special forces concluded their joint 'Cyclone-4' training exercise in Cairo. The exercise focused on counter-terrorism operations, hostage rescue scenarios, and advanced tactical skills.
